More Atticus Finch Revelations – He Had Irritable Bowel Syndrome!

Harper Lee’s sequel to her iconic novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” “Go Set A Watchman” has many literary critics up in arms over revelations that the character is no longer the saintly lawyer and moral pillar of Maycomb that Gregory Peck won an Oscar portraying. He is now a changed, bitter man but there may be a deeper reason for his new found turmoil and internal change – IBS. Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

In the third chapter of the new novel it is revealed that Atticus orders and consumes shellfish. This is first time in the character’s history that shrimp or shellfish of any kind is introduced into his diet. Although the causes of IBS can vary widely the symptoms are generally any combination of pain in the abdomen, acid reflux, anxiety, belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, increased thoughts of segregation and urgency in need to defecate.
