George Papadopoulos was the first to plead guilty in special counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Then speaking directly to Papadopoulos, Moss said: "I know the sentence is painful to you I'm sure you're wondering what case what comes next", and that he was impressed by his words to the judge. Papadopoulos also had contact with senior-level advisors and members of the Trump campaign on numerous occasions and was told by a Russian-connected London professor, Joseph Mifsud, that the Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

Far from cooperating to energize the special counsel probe, prosecutors Jeannie Rhee, Andrew Goldstein and Aaron Zelinsky argued, Papadopoulos and his wife gave life to a false narrative about them and the seriousness of his offense.

As part of his sentence, Papadopoulos also will have one year of court supervision, 200 hours of community service and was fined $9,500.

Judge Randolph D Moss said the sentence could have been higher but he sensed "genuine remorse" from Papadopolous.

Papadopoulos lied to investigators because he was "caught off-guard by an impromptu investigation" and wanted to "save his professional aspirations", his lawyers said.

In addition, they said Mr. Papadopoulos did not provide "substantial assistance" and only came clean after he was confronted with his own e-mails, texts and other evidence.

"I see Papadopoulos today", he told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Papdopoulos's lawyer Tom Breen said "the president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever did".

U.S. Gulf Coast bracing for Hurricane Gordon as storm nears
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said the city has "the pumps and the power" needed to protect its residents from the storm. A hurricane warning was put into effect for the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border.

Attorneys for Papadopoulos had sought to avoid prison, instead requesting probation.

Richard Pinedo, who was not involved with the Trump campaign, pleaded guilty in a case related to the Mueller probe in February to aiding and abetting interstate and foreign identity fraud by creating, buying and stealing hundreds of bank account numbers that he sold to individuals to use with large digital payment companies.

Memos authored by House Republicans and Democrats, now declassified, show that information about Papadopoulos' contacts with Russian intermediaries triggered the FBI's counterintelligence investigation in July 2016 into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.

Defence lawyer Thomas Breen said his client was affected by Mr Trump's cries of "fake news" ahead of the interview and was torn between wanting to cooperate with investigators and wanting to remain loyal to the President.

He later attempted to use his links to the professor and Russian nationals to attempt to set up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We were hoping for no jail time but two weeks is OK", Maria Stamatopoulos said.

Asked if Papadopoulos still remained loyal to Trump, Breen smiled wryly and paused for a beat.

The court filing also suggested that both Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions approved of his outreach to Moscow, contradicting Sessions' sworn testimony.
