The US military is seeking to reallocate US$300 million in assistance to Pakistan due to Islamabad's lack of "decisive actions" in support of regional American strategy, the Pentagon said Saturday.

But top American military commanders accuse Russian Federation of trying to destabilize and undercut global gains in Afghanistan by maintaining ties to the Taliban insurgency, charges Moscow denies.

If Congress approves the latest announced suspension, the United States would withhold a total of US$800 million that had earlier been earmarked for Pakistan's defense forces, the reports said.

Dr Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, another International Relations expert said the USA was trying all tactics to pressure Pakistan.

The suspension comes days before US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is due to meet with Khan in Islamabad.

Pakistan has received more than $33 billion in US assistance since 2002, including more than $14 billion in Coalition Support Funds, a US Defence Department programme to reimburse allies that have incurred costs in supporting counter-insurgency operations.

Pakistan claimed on Sunday that the $300 million aid the Pentagon has made a decision to scrap was not a military aid as the United States owed this money to Islamabad for its support in the war on terror and was supposed to reimburse it.

Though the funds have been withheld this year, Pakistan could again be eligible next year for CSF, with U.S. officials saying that Islamabad could win back that support if it changed its behaviour.

"It is a calibrated, incremental ratcheting up of pressure on Pakistan", said Sameer Lalwani, co-director of the South Asia program at the Stimson Center think-tank in Washington.

He also blamed the government of former premier Nawaz Sharif for current tension with the U.S. Mr. Qureshi said the new government of Imran Khan will take all decision keeping in mind the interests of Pakistan. The focus in Afghanistan should be a peace process with the Afghan Taliban, and while Pakistan has consistently expressed an interest in supporting a peace process, it can only do so much in the face of political disarray in Afghanistan and reluctance in the United States to engage the Taliban in dialogue.
