The president is calling "fake news" on the reports saying he's anxious about his son's legal exposure on this matter, but in the meantime, there are lingering questions about this, along with Michael Cohen's claim that Trump Sr. personally approved the meeting before it happened.
Sunday's tweet appears to acknowledge that the meeting was actually predicated on opposition research: "This was a meeting to get information on an opponent". "I did not know about it!"
Amid the fallout, Trump Jr. even released his own emails regarding the meeting, which proved that it had been pitched to him, by music publicist Rob Goldstone, as a meeting with the "Crown prosecutor of Russia" who had "offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father".
Donald Trump Jr. stands onstage with his father then-presidential nominee Donald Trump after a debate against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, in September 2016.
Later, Donald Jr said he had accepted the meeting hoping to get dirt on Mrs Clinton but he said nothing came of it. There have been no reports that information about Clinton was offered or exchanged.
Any legal battle over whether the president can be compelled to testify could go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said on ABC's "This Week" show.
Trump was involved in the statement but did not personally dictate it.

Trump Insults Lebron James' Intelligence After NBA Star Calls Him Divisive
The CNN interview aired on Monday, after James opened his school for disadvantaged children in his hometown of Akron, Ohio . The network's PR and communications Twitter feed invoked first lady Melania Trump to hit back at the president.
Trump and his son have both said then-candidate Trump had no advance knowledge of the meeting and that the meeting itself was not useful to the campaign. Federal campaign finance law makes it illegal for a campaign to accept a "thing of value", such as a financial contribution, from foreign nationals. Cohen has indicated that he would tell prosecutors that Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting ahead of time.
It is, however, against the law for USA campaigns to receive donations or items of value from foreigners, and that June 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya is now a subject of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. The New York Times reported last month that Mueller has been reviewing Trump's tweets as part of his probe into whether the President obstructed justice.
But on Sunday, Trump tweeted the meeting discussed information and getting dirt on his election opponent, Hillary Clinton. "And I fear that the message that the Kremlin cares most about is what they hear from Donald Trump, and that is still one of denial and cover for the Russians".
Lawyers described the statement as "short but accurate", according to The Post. "The number one concern of his right now has to be that statement to Congress from Don Jr. that Donald Trump didn't know about the meeting".
"The question is how would it be illegal?"
Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday there is "plenty of evidence of collusion or conspiracy in plain sight" regarding the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. "When you look at a meeting, George, that took place ... now two years ago, the question is, 'What law, statute or rule or regulation's been violated?' Nobody's pointed to one". I mean, they're calling it worse than contradictions obviously, ' she said.
