On Thursday, his Slovenian in-laws, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became United States citizens in a private ceremony in Manhattan by taking advantage of that very programme.
Viktor and Amalija Knavs are retired, and they maintain regular contact with the Trump family, often traveling with the first family on trips to Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster, New Jersey.
"It stands for a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification", he added to The Times.
William White, a 74-year-old actor, said, with his eyebrows raised, "I'm happy for them".
The idea that family-based immigration could be labeled as "dirty" might have a lot to do with the Knavs' son-in-law.
"It went well and they are very grateful and appreciative of this wonderful day for their family", he said in a statement to CNN.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has made a point to target undocumented immigrants, whether they have a criminal record or not.

Melania Trump became a U.S. citizen in 2006, after entering the United States on a coveted Einstein visa for people of "extraordinary ability" in 2001 when she was working as a model.
Viktor and Amalija Knavs, who are from Slovenia, had previously been living in the U.S.as legal permanent residents with green cards. "We just thank everyone for their attention to this very important dialogue on immigration".
She settled in NY in 1996 and met Mr Trump two years later. Viktor was a vehicle dealer while Amalija worked in a textile factory.
The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building.
The couple met in Sevnica, Slovenia in 1966, and Melania was born in the same town.
