In the evening, half-an-hour after sunset, looking towards the sky opposite direction to sunset, one can spot planet Mars between East and South East direction.
Both pictures were captured when the planets were near opposition - when they are lined up with the Sun and Earth and at their closest to Earth for a given year - thus appearing brightest in the sky. Mars was captured on July 18, at just 36.9 million miles from Earth, near its July 27 opposition.
This proximity interprets that the Earth is in "opposition" with Mars - meaning that it is sitting directly between the Sun and the planet.
Mars was in opposition on July 27, while Saturn was in opposition a month earlier on June 27, so Earth has been getting spoiled with incredible glimpses of its neighboring planets in the past few months.
Mars will next be close to Earth in October 2020.
The distance between Earth and Mars changes throughout the year due to their elliptical shaped paths. Check out this quick guide to help you get more out of your night sky photos.
