China will hold a fresh round of trade talks with the United States in Washington later this month, Beijing said on Thursday, offering a glimmer of hope for progress in resolving a conflict that has set world financial markets on edge.

"The U.S. Treasury Department wasn't available for comment".

Invited by the U.S., the delegation, headed by Commerce Vice Minister Wang Shouwen, will meet with a team of negotiators led by David Malpass, undersecretary for global affairs of the U.S. Treasury Department, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement (link in Chinese).

The two sides will impose an additional round of tariffs on $16 billion worth of goods from each country effective August 23.

But the discussions failed to reduce tensions as the United States slapped tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods in early July, triggering an immediate dollar-for-dollar retaliation from Beijing.

Beijing has said it will retaliate in kind.

The last round of talks was in early June.

Beijing will send a delegation to Washington this month, led by Wang Shouwen, its vice commerce minister, following an invitation from the Trump administration. Beijing retaliated by imposing the same percentage of retaliatory tariffs on 545 USA items, also worth $34 billion. The invitation for the talks may have been meant to steady markets, they said.

"Our Country was built on Tariffs, and Tariffs are now leading us to great new Trade Deals - as opposed to the terrible and unfair Trade Deals that I inherited as your President", Trump tweeted Wednesday. Another $16 billion in levies will be effective later in August. However, financial observers expressed skepticism that any tangible agreement will come from the meeting, citing that the U.S. Trade Representative was not involved and the talks will occur between lower-level officials.
