From its desolate West Texas launchpad, Jeff Bezos' rocket company Blue Origin launched another reusable rocket into space, and then successfully landed both the rocket booster and the large-windowed crew capsule.
The capsule, meanwhile, climbed to a maximum altitude of around 393,000 feet - more than 74 miles - subjecting an instrumented test dummy - "Mannequin Skywalker" - to about 10 times the force of gravity during the brief abort motor firing, which pushed the craft about 50,000 feet higher than a normal flight.
The climax of the uncrewed test flight came shortly after New Shepard's capsule separated from its booster and switched on its 70,000-pound-thrust escape rocket motor.
The reusable New Shepard booster is created to take off from a launch pad, climb to the internationally-recognized boundary of space at an altitude of 62 miles (100 kilometers), and land nearby with rocket thrust and aerobrakes.
The launch was pulled off without a hitch: both the booster and the crew capsule returned to Earth.
The booster and spacecraft blasted off from the company's launch site in West Texas shortly after 11 a.m. Unlike NASA's Mercury and Apollo spacecraft, which jettisoned their escape rockets before reaching orbit, Blue Origin's is built into the capsule.
At the time of publishing, Blue Origin Origin did not reply to questions about how many more tests flights are needed before testing with humans begins.

'Wild Boars' likely to be discharged on Thursday
British cave divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen found the group on July 2, squatting on the ledge in the flooded chamber. He said: "Are we heroes? But it's really the worldwide team I would like to focus on and the Thai SEALs".
Unlike SpaceX, which thus far has largely focused on sending cargo into space as opposed to humans, Blue Origin is leading the charge on space tourism and crewed missions.
The reusable New Shepard rocket settles to a picture-perfect touchdown.
While testing with New Shepard continues, work on Blue Origin's next vehicle, the New Glenn is pressing on, albeit mainly away from the attention of the media. It's coming, but we've got our eye on the prize, and we've got to make sure we understand our system through and through.
"We haven't started selling tickets yet for the trip to space", said Ariane Cornell, Blue Origin's launch commentator. "At Blue Origin, we're all about safety", she said. There is speculation that Bezos himself, the world's richest person, will be among the first people to fly on New Shepard.
Blue Origin is developing a much bigger rocket, called New Glenn, as an orbital launcher.
