Prince William visited Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, after arriving in Israel on the first official trip there by a United Kingdom royal.

Yad Vashem's Chairman Avner Shalev will accompany Prince William who will participate in a memorial ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance, visit the Children's Memorial, and sign the Yad Vashem Guest Book.

Though the trip is being billed as non-political, and places a special emphasis on technology and joint Israeli-Arab projects, William will also be meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, and visiting landmark Jerusalem sites at the heart of the century-old conflict.

William arrived in Jordan at the start of a Middle East tour.

In signing the Yad Vashem guestbook, the prince called it a "profoundly moving experience" and said the Holocaust was "almost impossible to comprehend". His great-grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece - the mother of the Duke of Edinburgh - is recognised by the memorial for her role in rescuing Jews during the Holocaust by hiding three members of a family called Cohen in her palace in Athens during the Nazi occupation of Greece.

Prince William made sure to take a photo of himself in the same location as his wife some thirty years ago, and it will surely be shown to the couple's three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis when he returns to Kensington Palace in a few days.

The duke's trip covers Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories.

The prince's visit comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with deadly clashes on the Gaza border following protests as Israel marks its 70th anniversary year, and U.S. president Donald Trump's decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
