Consumer Reports has upgraded its previous verdict on Tesla's Model 3 auto, giving it a "recommended buy" rating after the electric vehicle maker improved the sedan's ability to stop quickly with an online update of its antilock braking software. Elon Musk, co-founder and chief executive of Tesla, had said it would remotely update the software.
The Tesla Model 3 has managed to earn a "Recommended" rating from Consumer Reports after a recent firmware update improved the vehicle's braking distance by almost 20 feet.
Tesla revealed earlier this week it has begun upgrading the braking software on its Model 3 after Consumer Reports refused to recommend the vehicle over braking distances.
Consumer Reports has agreed to rent another Model 3 from Tesla to update its findings in those areas, though they won't affect the car's overall score, because Consumer Reports only publishes formal ratings on cars that it has been able to buy independently.
In its updated review, Consumer Reports still found flaws in the Model 3, such as wind noise, a stiff ride and an uncomfortable rear seat. Musk also suggested the car's 15-inch touchscreen display could receive an over-the-air update to make it easier to use. Musk said in his tweet that user interface improvements are "coming via remote software update later this month". "Road noise and ride comfort already addressed too".

The updated brakes, while a large improvement, do not place the Model 3 at the top of its class, the publication said.
At the time, the outlet claimed the Model 3's braking abilities were noticeably worse than a full-size pick-up truck.
Also mentioned in CR's updated Model 3 ratings were the difficulties associated with the car's 15-inch center-mounted touchscreen, which handles nearly all of the vehicle's controls.
'The CR braking result is inconsistent with other reviewers, but might indicate that some Model 3s have longer braking distances than others, ' he said. May just be a question of firmware tuning, in which case can be solved by an OTA software update'.
"Really appreciate the high quality critical feedback from Consumer Reports", Musk said in a tweet Wednesday.
