The stories from Weinstein's accusers spurred the global #MeToo movement.
A man who once ruled over a showbusiness empire has now found himself paraded in front of the world's cameras in handcuffs. I commend the courage of all those who have come forward and who have had the courage to speak their truth to a rich, powerful famous man. Both Argento and McGowan have accused Weinstein of rape and were included in the first initial reports on his misconduct.
Weinstein was arrested on charges of rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct in regards to two separate incidents involving two separate women, according to Deadline.
"Mr. Weinstein has always maintained that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual behavior with anyone", Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman said via a statement. Creative Artists Agency, a major talent firm, has since said in a statement, "We apologize to any person the agency let down". Brafman says he doesn't think a jury would believe Weinstein's accusers - if potential jurors are "not consumed by the movement that seems to have consumed this case".
Weinstein is expected to be charged with raping one woman and forcing another to perform oral sex on him, the Times reported, citing unidentified law enforcement officials.
Weinstein handed off the books at the police station, where he was booked quickly.
He walked into the station clutching several books, apparently including the Rodgers and Hammerstein biography "Something Wonderful" and a volume on late director Elia Kazan. Other suspects who recognized him yelled out, "Yo, Harvey!"
The top charges against Weinstein carry the potential for up to 25 years in prison.
The charges followed a months-long investigation that involved the Manhattan district attorney's office and the New York Police Department.

Weinstein, who denies the allegations, turns himself in to NY police after months of sexual abuse allegations from scores of women that toppled him from Hollywood's most powerful ranks.
Weinstein's lawyer is one of America's most celebrated criminal defense attorneys.
Miramax, the company he founded with his brother, Bob, helped reinvent independent film, with hits like "Pulp Fiction" and "Shakespeare in Love".
But there were rumours in Hollywood for years about Weinstein's pursuit of young actresses. Mr Farrow won a Pulitzer Prize for his Weinstein coverage in The New Yorker.
Major figures in media and politics have lost their jobs or had their reputations tarnished by allegations that they subjected women to unwanted advances or outright assaults. They include TV hosts Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose, comedian Louis C.K., Democratic U.S. Sen.
The investigation is being run by the U.S. District Attorney's Office in the Southern District of NY.
But on Friday, it was Weinstein in the spotlight.
"Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell".
