Sen. Joe Donnelly on Saturday became the second Democrat to announce he will cast his vote in favor of Central Intelligence Agency director nominee Gina Haspel - boosting her prospects of being confirmed.

The senator from IN, who met with Haspel on Thursday, said IN a statement that he had "a tough, frank, and extensive discussion" with her that covered both her vision for the agency and its past use of "enhanced" interrogations against terrorist captives, including methods such as waterboarding that are widely considered torture.

"For those reasons, and after careful consideration, I will support Ms. Haspel's nomination to lead the agency to which she has dedicated her career", he added. So far, the only Republicans who have announced opposition to Haspel are Sens. Her role in the program was addressed several times during her confirmation hearing this week.

Ms. Haspel, 61, rejected Democrats' suggestions that she declassify more information about her background, saying that the director should be subject to agency guidelines on keeping its secrets.

At her confirmation hearing Wednesday, Haspel vowed that she would not restart the CIA's detention and interrogation program if confirmed to the top job. "Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying".

Democrats have expressed concern about Haspel's involvement in the post 9/11-era interrogation and detention programs. Donnelly and Manchin are up for re-election in November, and Trump appeared at a political rally Thursday in IN, in which he singled out Donnelly and called on voters to support the Republican nominee, Mike Braun. Should a group of terrorists kidnap your child and one of the terrorists was apprehended by the police, would you not want law enforcement to use every method possible to locate your child? She pushed back on charges that the programme was immoral, insisting that her own "moral compass is strong", and fought to describe what she said were the CIA's successes in capturing most-wanted men.

"Sen. McCain's view of what the country's doing won the day", Graham told AP.

Haspel also said she believes the US should hold itself to the moral standards outlined in the manual. Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia - who also is up for reelection in a state that went for Trump - announced earlier this week that he would support Haspel's nomination. McCain is not expected to be in Washington for the vote later this month as he battles an aggressive form of brain cancer.

With two Democrats now backing her nomination-the first to do so was Sen.

Over the past few days, Mike Braun, the Republican nominee for Senate in IN, attacked Donnelly for being undecided on Haspel's nomination and playing a political game with his vote, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
