Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are likely to focus on pressing global and regional issues, including impact of the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, during their informal summit in the Russian city of Sochi on Monday.
"After the military success (of the Syrian army in recent months) supplementary conditions have been created which favour the start of a political process on a major scale", Mr Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin following the meeting in the southern Russian city of Sochi.
The two leaders discussed the need to strengthen the work on rendering of humanitarian aid to Syrians and economistsview Syria. The fallout over the Iran deal is a rare topic for rapprochement between Europe and Moscow, whose relations are marred by disagreements over the Syria conflict, Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea and the subsequent war in eastern Ukraine.
"President [Putin] pointed out the Syrian Armed Forces' considerable achievements in struggle with terrorist units and congratulated Assad on this occasion".
Putin said the next task is "economic recovery and humanitarian assistance to the people who found themselves in a hard situation".
The latest round of Syria peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana wrapped up on Tuesday, but did not however make any concrete progress towards ending the seven-year conflict that has cost 350,000 lives. They will be sent to the United Nations, it is on the basis of the Geneva process.
