Riess was seen in surveillance video smiling and talking with the woman, Pamela Hutchinson, who police said she'd later kill so she could steal her identity.
Lois Riess had left town by then. Hutchinson's purse was found in disarray and her keys were missing.
Concerned that David Riess had not been seen in more than a week, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported, one of his business partners asked police to look for him. Hutchinson's uncle told WTVR she'd been shot through the heart. Her identification, credit cards and auto keys were gone.
Riess' whereabouts remained a mystery until last week, when she became a suspect in Hutchinson's murder after authorities in Florida found a white 2005 Cadillac Escalade that Riess was believed to have been driving after her husband's death. So was her vehicle. More public advisories went out, with more photos of the grandmotherly woman and the auto she was believed to be traveling in, which was now the vehicle of the woman police think she killed. They say her current location is unknown.
Authorities also have said they suspect that after David Riess was killed, his wife transferred almost $10,000 from his business account into his personal account and then forged his signature on three checks to herself for $11,000.
