"Mr. Cohen reached out to me after being contacted by this woman's attorney, Keith Davidson, " Broidy said in his statement. "Although I had not previously hired Mr. Cohen, I retained Mr. Cohen after he informed me about his prior relationship with Mr. Davidson".
Cohen's brokering of the Broidy deal emerged after his office in NY was raided last week by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents reportedly seeking evidence of bank fraud and other crimes.
Broidy has resigned from the Republican National Committee (RNC).
The Journal said that the payment was negotiated late a year ago and that the first installment was due on December 1. Cohen, Daniels and Davidson signed the agreement, for which Daniels received $130,000. Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, is now suing Trump and Cohen to have the agreement tossed out.
Broidy, meanwhile, has been embroiled in controversy stemming from his work with George Nader, a Lebanese-American businessman who was confronted by agents working for Mueller in January and has since been cooperating with the Russian Federation probe.
Davidson and Cohen were also in communication about a third agreement involving former Playboy centerfold Karen McDougal. McDougal said her lawyer at the time secretly negotiated with Cohen on a deal with American Media Inc, publisher of the National Enquirer, which paid her $150,000 in 2016 to keep quiet.
Cohen set up the deal in late 2017, said sources familiar with the matter.
