The elderly husband of Queen Elizabeth II is set to undergo hip surgery in a London hospital.

The Duke of Edinburgh will have planned hip surgery today at the King Edward VII Hospital where he will go under general anaesthetic. "He is progressing satisfactorily at this early stage", the palace added in a statement.

He is said to be "comfortable and in good spirits".

Details of the duke's condition, or which joint is causing the issue, have not been released by Buckingham Palace but the late Queen Mother underwent two successful hip operations in the 1990s, first when aged 95 then later when she was 97.

Philip, 96, is understood to have had trouble with the hip for about a month and will have an operation on Wednesday to resolve the problem.
