The elderly husband of Queen Elizabeth II is set to undergo hip surgery in a London hospital.
The Duke of Edinburgh will have planned hip surgery today at the King Edward VII Hospital where he will go under general anaesthetic. "He is progressing satisfactorily at this early stage", the palace added in a statement.
He is said to be "comfortable and in good spirits".
Details of the duke's condition, or which joint is causing the issue, have not been released by Buckingham Palace but the late Queen Mother underwent two successful hip operations in the 1990s, first when aged 95 then later when she was 97.
Philip, 96, is understood to have had trouble with the hip for about a month and will have an operation on Wednesday to resolve the problem.

In August 2017, the Duke retired from 65 years of public service, more than five years after the Palace originally said he would gradually "wind down" his workload, though he remained keen to carry out many of his duties. At times blunt to the point of rudeness, Philip is Elizabeth's most important support.
Prince Philip has been in pain for over a month now and has been forced to cancel a number of rare public engagements.
He has been largely blessed with good health, but he has been admitted to hospital with various complaints in recent years.
