It was a 1-2 punch at the end of last week with high winds and heavy precipitation both rain and snow as a power Nor'easter pummeled the Mid-Atlantic and New England.

The National Weather Service says the storm could drop a foot of snow or more in parts of the region, along with freezing rain and winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour.

"Latest forecast model guidance suggest a storm track that will lower snow amounts inside [Interstate] 495 and the [southeastern/northeastern] coastal plain, " forecasters wrote Tuesday afternoon, urging people to stay tuned. Strong northeasterly winds will continue to kick up large waves through Tuesday with coastal flooding and erosion likely along the south shore of Nova Scotia. This will change rain to snow nearly everywhere.

A storm system dumping snow on parts of the Midwest has shut down hundreds of schools in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Strong winds are on tap for this snowstorm, though not quite as powerful as the destructive gusts during the nor'easter on Friday and Saturday.

Snow will be heaviest west of Boston and especially Route 495. The storm is encountering dry and stable air across southern and eastern Wisconsin.

"The one coming from the west could bring us some wet snow overnight, probably at most an inch or two by dawn". High: low-mid 40s. The early morning commute will likely have falling snow, gusty winds and temps near 31.

The snow will mainly pickup after 8 a.m. Wednesday with a high near 37. Now, a second March nor'easter is preparing to bear down on the region Tuesday night into Wednesday. Low: Upper 20s - low 30s.

"Then it keeps snowing until Tuesday morning", he said.

The weather service has posted a winter storm watch for the western part of the state, where the storm will arrive first. In Southeastern Connecticut, snowfall accumulation may be cut down by mixing with sleet and rain.

At this point, Ayd said the extended forecast looks good.

In general snow totals between 6 and 9 inches are expected across the warning area, with the highest snowfall totals, near 12 inches, expected between Princeton and Little Falls in central Minnesota.
