Sacramento police say nobody was arrested in connection with the protests Wednesday outside a hotel where Sessions spoke to California law enforcement officials.
Sessions particularly called out Oakland's mayor, Libby Schaaf, after she tipped off an immigrant community to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid, as an example of what he sees as California's lawlessness. "California has exercised its rights to define the circumstances where state and local law enforcement may participate in immigration enforcement", he said.
Ironically, the Obama administration, through Attorney General Eric Holder, challenged an Arizona immigration law on similar grounds to those that Sessions is using to confront California - and prevailed at the Supreme Court.
"The provisions of state law at issue have the objective and effect of making it more hard for federal immigration officers to carry out their responsibilities in California", Justice Department lawyers wrote, according to the Post.
"At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America".
Sessions called the California laws "irrational, unfair and unconstitutional". Rather than effectively force millions of hardworking immigrant families to go underground, the state imposes some very basic and modest limitations on the circumstances in which it gives ICE the run of the place.

"We extended an invitation to speak at our event", Leveroni said in a phone interview Tuesday.
California is home to the largest number of undocumented immigrants, almost one-quarter of the estimated 11 million in total across the United States. In response to this sanctuary state law, the Trump administration had chose to bring the state into court, suing Democratic Gov.
"Immigration law is the province of the federal government", Sessions said. In response to this stunt, I want my message to be clear to Attorney General Sessions: your threats will not change who we are. AG Becerra says California is not in the business of deportation, but in the business of safety. Jerry Brown told reporters Wednesday.
Brown said he is still willing to cooperate with Sessions on immigration enforcement targeted at criminals, which he said is possible because of limitations he demanded in SB 54.
Brown speculated that Sessions' dig on California may be an attempt to ease an openly rocky relationship with the president, saying, "Maybe he's trying to keep his job because the president is not too happy with him". "The position that's taken by California to me, is not only unlawful, but radical".
The two top officials and the state of California are named as defendants in the lawsuit filed by Justice Department lawyers on behalf of the United States. "We are going to continue to be who we are proud to be and that is a city of inclusion, a city that protects immigrants". He said the mayor's alert allowed 800 "criminals" to escape ICE agents during a statewide sweep that netted 232 people.
