The new indictment says Manafort and Gates passed the money they received from Ukraine through foreign bank accounts to hide it from the Internal Revenue Service.
In the DC charges alone, Manafort faces a likely sentence of more than 15 years to nearly 20 years in prison if found guilty. Guidelines call for about eight to 10 years, though.
Gates and Manafort were both charged with multiple counts of conspiracy, tax fraud and money laundering stemming from lobbying and consulting work related to Ukrainian politicians who are strong allies of Russian Federation.
He appeared in the federal court in Washington on February 28 to plead not guilty to 17 grand jury charges of conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, lying to federal agents and failing to register as a foreign agent. The charges against Manafort don't relate to the election, although some of the alleged crimes occurred while he ran Trump's campaign.
U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III placed Manafort on home confinement and required him to wear a Global Positioning System bracelet pending his trial date of July 10.
