A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows emergency department visits for opioid overdoses rose past year.

Previously, the agency looked at death from opioids, which lag behind reports from emergency rooms.

Pennsylvania saw an 81 percent increase in hospital emergency department cases involving opioid overdoses in the 12 months leading up to last September.

The number of visits rose 30 percent across the country from July 2016 to September 2017.

The largest regional increase occurred in the Midwest, which saw a 69.7 percent jump in opioid overdoses, according to the report.

Under state law, doctors are required to check a prescription drug monitoring database to see if a patient is getting large amounts of opioids from different doctors. Visits rose 35 percent in IN, 28 percent in OH and 21 percent in Missouri. "So we think there probably is not an increase in people using drugs, but there is an increase in the danger associated with a single use".

"Yep", he said. "We see a little of everything".

According to the report, ME saw a 25-49 percent increase in the same time period. But it could also be a statistical anomaly since that data was collected from just 16 states. Schuchat said they are hearing about many "innovative" strategies across the U.S.to provide help to people who need treatment. "EDs can link these patients to mental health and substance abuse treatment centers, which can assist them in gaining access to medication-assisted treatment", Adams said.

Winter Weather Advisory & Wet Snow Tonight
A storm system dumping snow on parts of the Midwest has shut down hundreds of schools in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. The weather service has posted a winter storm watch for the western part of the state, where the storm will arrive first.

The Attorney General's office reported that a major factor in overdoses increasing is the presence of fentanyl mixed with heroin, making the drugs more powerful and more likely to cause an overdose.

The ED2Recovery Program has also expanded to UW Hospital and there are efforts to expand it statewide using federal grant money.

"American physicians, and the public, have come to believe that opioids should be the first line medication for moderate to severe pain".

The crisis is gripping Illinois' urban and suburban communities alike.

/URL Gordon Smith, executive vice president of the Maine Medical Association, which represents doctors before the Legislature, said emergency department usage is yet another sign that Maine's response to the opioid crisis has been tepid.

"It's consistent with what we're seeing with the increase in overdose deaths", said Bob Fowler, executive director of Milestone Recovery, which operates a detox center in Portland and a residential treatment program in Old Orchard Beach.

The goal is to better understand, and improve the response to, the crisis that has made drug overdoses the leading cause of death for Americans under 50. But some states that historically have had the worst opioid problems, including West Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, experienced small decreases in overdose visits. Increases were seen in rates across demographic groups and all 5 USA regions; the largest increases were seen in the Southwest, Midwest, and West (about 7 to 11% per quarter). There were variations in these rates among states in the Northeast and Southeast regions, with some states seeing significant increases and others experiencing nonsignificant decreases.

"Emergency department education and post-overdose protocols, including providing naloxone and linking people to treatment, are critical needs", Vivolo-Kantor said.
