Morbitzer said Joering, a 17-year police veteran, died at the scene.

One of the officers, 54-year-old Eric Joering, was killed instantly. "This was their calling and they did it right", said Morbitzer, his voice halting and thick with emotion. Reports say the suspect was also shot but their condition was not immediately known. The Columbus Division of Police will be handling the investigation. "We are thinking of the officers' families, their fellow officers and everyone involved, and we are grateful to all OH law enforcement who put themselves in harm's way to keep us safe".

The city of Westerville is asking for prayers for the officers and their families.

Gov. John Kasich tweeted his condolences: "I am very saddened to learn of the deaths of two of my hometown police officers today".
