ONE of the strongest earthquakes to hit the Caribbean in years struck off the coast of Honduras this afternoon, shaking the mainland and sparking tsunami fears. The temblor set of tsunami warnings that were canceled and hour later.
Tsunami warning centers said no tsunami waves had been confirmed but stress that people in Puerto Rico, other Caribbean islands and the coast of Central America should be alert to the danger of possible tsunami. The tremor struck in the sea about 125 miles north-northeast of Barra Patuca, Honduras, and 188 miles southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands.
A tsunami advisory signals a threat to those in or near water, as strong currents and waves could be unsafe.
The temblor was only 6.2 miles deep.
The depth of the quake was 10km which would have amplified its effect.

Hector Pesquera, Puerto Rico's public safety secretary, said that authorities were monitoring the coastlines of 46 municipalities on the USA territory and that police were patrolling certain areas as a backup.
The quake rattled windows in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa about 520km to the east, but no damage was immediately reported.
