Srinagar:Three bodies were recovered and one person was found alive under snow on Saturday after avalanches swept away two sumo vehicles at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district. Last month, three soldiers went missing when an avalanche hit their outpost Gurez - their bodies recovered days later.
A massive rescue operation has been launched by police and army despite snowing and very poor visibility, a police official told UNI over phone from Kupwara.
Jehangir said a total of eleven people were killed in the avalanche.
He said police, army, SDRF and local volunteers were taking part in the rescue operation.
"Locals know the terrain of the area and worked hard with the joint rescue team. His body has been recovered", he said.

A cab was swept away by a snow avalanche at Sadhna top while another avalanche hit a BEACON officer on Friday between 1515 hrs to 1530 hrs. The survivor was identified as Ghulam Nabi Bhat, son of Ali Mohammed Bhat, a resident of Kalmona, Kralpora, Kupwara.
The spokesman said the chief minister directed the Kupwara district administration to ensure all possible medical assistance to the injured.
Minister for Tourism, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti also expressed grief and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
