OnePlus 5T now supports Widevine Level 3, which supports only standard definition streams.
The problem was brought to light on OnePlus' forums, where one user pointed out that the problem is related to the phones' lack of support for Google's Widevine level 1 DRM, which many services require for HD streaming. OnePlus 5T now comes with Widevine Level 3 support which only streams standard definition videos and doesn't support HD streaming.
Netflix makes use of Google's Widevine DRM to play content. OnePlus devices now are certified for the L3 security level - which doesn't allow users to playback content at higher resolutions.

It was the same user who confirmed that the YouTube app didn't face any issue with playing HD videos. Even though it packs the flagship-level hardware including Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 2160x1080p screen, the phone is only able to stream in standard definition (SD). And second, that the OnePlus 5 has been like this for a year and no one apparently noticed.
