The Sensex and Nifty surpassed the 34,000 and 10,500 levels for the first time, shrugging off below-expected corporate earnings as well as uncertainties on the global front. Sensex rose by 7,430.37 points in 2017, which is 27.91 points.
It had gained 508.92 points, or 1.94 per cent, in 2016.
"Ever since Gujarat elections, expectations are rising that the upcoming Budget would be rural focused and that is supporting the market sentiment in the near term".
The 30-share index started the day on a strong note at 33,889.39 and hit a high of 34,086.05 before closing at 34,056.83, up by 208.80 points, or 0.62%.

BSE Metals and Realty indices rose (101.94%) and 94.02%, while BSE FMCG and BSE Capital Goods gained 35.87% and 35.43%, respectively. Japan's Nikkei 225 has edged up 58 points, Hong Kong's Hang Seng has gained 54 points and China's Shanghai Composite has added 5 points.

While the S&P BSE Mid-cap index saw gains of 48 per cent, the small cap index rose 58 per cent.
European markets were down in early trade with Paris CAC 40 falling 0.11%, while Frankfurt's DAX shed 0.29%.
