Target is introducing a new way for consumers to pay for their purchases while never having to leave the company's app. After you're done shopping, you can present your Wallet barcode at the register to check out.
The solution is "four times faster than other payment types", according to Target, though that refers to other payment types available in Target since the retailer has been a holdout against comparably fast NFC payments from Apple Pay and Android Pay, a reluctance that dates to Target's membership in the now defunct MCX, a merchant-led mobile payment consortium. In a recent post, America's second-largest retailer announced that it had rolled out Wallet, its own mobile payment system that is now active as a feature for Target's iOS and Android apps.
Currently, Wallet is only open to those who have the Target REDcard, but the feature will roll out to non-cardholders soon. According to the company, the feature will also allow customers to keep Cartwheel offers, Weekly Ad coupons and payment options in the same app. Target is in the midst of a major project to combine the Cartwheel app with the main Target mobile app.

It appears that Target is still not keen on accepting Apple Pay as a mode of payment in its onsite stores.
Mobile payment systems are nothing new to the likes of Walmart, CVS, and Kohl's, but for Target, they represent uncharted territory. Then again, it helps that Wallet only supports the retailer's own REDcard for the time being - the retailer saves on processing fees by pushing its own card. Folks will also be able to add their Target gift cards to Wallet, but again, the retailer did not say when that would be enabled. Wallet is now available on both Android and iOS versions of the Target app.
