Back in May, HP was struck with the surprising revelation that some models of its laptops had been shipping with a keylogger preinstalled on the systems.
HP laptops have been blighted by another keylogger (following the discovery of one in the firm's notebooks earlier this year), with the issue affecting nearly 500 devices - and it could even affect other manufacturers' portables. The security release also asserted that neither HP nor Synaptics had gained access to customer data as a result of the keylogger.
The security researcher, nicknamed ZwClose, found the bug when they were investigating the driver for ways that it can be used to adjust keyboard lighting. HP states that "A party would need administrative privileges in order to take advantage of the vulnerability".
The strings are reportedly connected to a hidden keylogger, which is a program that sends typed characters to an attacker through a Synaptics device driver that could be decoded.

A built-in keylogger has been discovered on a host of HP laptops for the second time in 2017. It'll also be available through Windows Update, Myng says.
While neither instance of the keylogger may have been malicious, the presence of such surveillance software could be detrimental to HP's brand image among consumers. The affected models include EliteBook, ProBook, Envy, Spectre, and many more.
Synaptics and HP did not immediately return requests for comment.
Next to each model number is the file you need to download that will remove the software from your laptop.
