Sources say that the apps will be able to run on touchscreens or with a mouse, depending on whether a user has downloaded the app on an iPhone, an iPad or a macOS computer. This will be a huge step for the Mac app ecosystem especially, as it should make it easier for third-party developers to maintain one app that runs on iOS and Macs. Unclear is whether Apple would merge the App Store and Mac App Store, which are now separate entities. Not only is that more work for the developer, but inevitably, more time is going to be spent on the mobile app, which has a far greater chance of success on the iOS App Store.
San Francisco-Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPad introduced a novel way of interacting with computers: via easy-to-use applications, accessible in the highly curated App Store. While Apple attempted to recreate the "walled garden" of iOS software on its desktop and notebook machines, developers have been more cautious, often opting instead to release in the more traditional manner rather than via the Cupertino firm's own download store. While plans for this feature remain fluid, it doesn't appear Apple is backing away from doing it.
Apple wouldn't be first to bring mobile and desktop apps closer together. Assuming it's implemented, Project Marzipan will likely be announced in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference and released to the public in September as part of a next-generation version of macOS.

Apple's app system changes would follow Microsoft. By allowing developers to build unified apps, it expands the marketplace which is good for developers, consumers, and Apple. It would also be beneficial to developers who would be able to get their apps in front of more people without putting in the extra work of creating a separate desktop version of their service.
Apple's reported plans are reminiscent of Microsoft's efforts with the Universal Windows Platform. However, a Chinese clothing brand named "Kon" with a very similar logo is now suing the iPhone maker for stealing its logo for the App Store, The Verge reports.
